Saturday just passed, I took my daughter for her first swimming lesson. She is eleven months old, which is a little bit late for a swimming starter here on Australia's Gold Coast. With the proximity to the ocean and "outdoor" way of life here, we are usually encouraged to start them in the pool at six months. Personally I was not too concerned about this though, I have been putting her in swimming pools and taking her to the beach since she was five weeks old. This early introduction to the water on Saturday really worthwhile.
Many children get very scared for her first swimming lesson. My daughter was, however, feel completely safe. While other babies were crying, she was laughing. I just put this down to the fact that I have in the water again and again aged for five weeks. She was in the water well, as it was already part of their environment, it was neither new nor unknown, so there was nothing to be fearful.
I think it is very importantfor children in the pool at a very early age. The lessons are very clever, they are to teach what they need to know when in contact with water. You do not learn how to swim laps, but they learn not to panic when her head goes under water. Correct stroke technique is not on the agenda, but is always on the side of the pool and learning a routine for ever from the pool.
So you see, do not swim toddler swimming lessons, but they areon familiarity with the water environment and strategies to help them if, God forbid, they come in contact with water when your back is turned. At the end of the day, the only player to get a child needs is to paddle to the edge of a pond and keep you on if they fall into the water, it could be your life long enough to see that you turn around and go as they save fish them out.
If you are living a parent and wherever it is possible for your child in contact with water, please cometeach them how to swim early. Many parents believe that swimming lessons encourage children to play with water, putting them in potential danger. This could not be further from the truth. Children will play near water whether they have lessons or not. Teaching your child how to swim though is a life skill which could save them from drowning. It really is worth the investment.
